The mechanisms for all, however, are fairly simple in terms of how they become triggered and then set off the alarm.
The most basic type is an alarm that works on a circuit system that is triggered when an intruder breaks the circuit. It may be an open system or a closed circuit system. In the closed variety, the circuit is working when the point of entry is closed. When someone opens it, this breaks the circuit, thus triggering the alarm.
In open systems, opening the window or door closes the circuit. When this happens, the alarm is triggered. These types of systems tend to be easier for someone breaking in to deactivate.
Most circuit systems will also include a control box that monitors the circuits and controls the alarm mechanism. In order to turn the alarm off, you need to enter a code on a keypad.
These types of systems work well for detecting entry. But once the entry has happened, you need an alternative method for detection. A common device used at this point is a motion detector.
Radar is used in some motion detectors. These emit energy that will bounce back to the sensor unchanged if no one is there to disturb it. If a body does interrupt the energy, it will bounce back changed and trigger the alarm.
Another type of motion detector that can be used is a photo sensor. In this case, it is a beam of light rather than radio energy. The beam is aimed toward a sensor, across a doorway for example. When the beam is broken, the change is sensed and the alarm is triggered.
Passive infrared motion detectors may also be incorporated into the security system. These types of devices sense an intruder by his body heat. The alarm is only triggered when there are very quick changes to the infrared energy.
The more sophisticated and effective systems will use different types of motion detectors depending on the area it is trying to protect. When the alarm goes off, a loud noise will go off in the building. This could be any combination of horns, sirens and bells. At the same time, a call may go to the local police station as well as the security company.
There is no reason to wait to invest in burglar alarms systems. There are enough varieties out there that you can find one to fit your budget. And you are sure to get a more restful sleep once you have it installed.
